Security and Peace of Mind in Your Automated Home

Given the prevalence of home robberies and theft, security is on the forefront of everyone’s mind, especially during the holidays, when many of us are away from home at some point or another. Home automation can increase both the security of your home and your peace of mind.

Door locks are an excellent addition to your home automation system. Manufacturers like Yale, Kwikset, and Baldwin make door locks that allow access via a code. These codes can be set to allow access to your home only at certain times or on specific dates as needed. If you have a cleaning service or dog walker coming to your home while you’re away, these codes can be exceedingly helpful while ensuring those individuals only have access to your home on your terms. Your home automation system can track who enters and exits your house (according to which code was used) and when. You can even have your system text you when someone has arrived!

Home automation can be synced with your security system as well. We specifically recommend the GE Concord4 system, which allows you to arm your doors and windows. Motion detectors will set off the alarm if something moves in your home while the alarm is set. If the alarm does go off, both interior and exterior sirens sound. Smoke, heat and carbon monoxide detectors can trigger the alarm as well, keeping you safe whether you’re home or away. If you use a monitoring company, the appropriate local authorities will be dispatched. Your security system can even be armed remotely, so don’t worry if you’re already on your way to the airport!

Whether you travel for pleasure, work or the holidays, an empty home is a target for burglars. Your smart home can turn on lights, music, and TVs throughout your absence to make it appear as if you’re home when you’re actually away.

Security cameras in conjunction with your home automation can allow you to view your home remotely from a smart phone or tablet. You can check for package deliveries or keep an eye on your dog during the day. You can record events as well, allowing for review of the recorded footage at any time. Security cameras not only keep you informed but also deter unwanted and illegal activity on your property. Your automated home can even send you a snapshot from your security camera if motion is detected on your front porch!

Regardless of which of these elements you choose to incorporate into your smart home, home automation can improve your safety, security, and peace of mind.
