The Pros and Cons of Unplugging While on Vacation

We live in a world inundated with electronics. How many times a day, or even an hour, do we check our text messages, emails and social media apps?

Staying connected ensures that we keep up with our workload and current events going on around us. While this tends to be the norm for our everyday lives, when we go on vacation it’s tempting to totally unplug. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of going technology-free while on vacation.

Pros

Most people rely on technology to perform work tasks and stay connected socially, but many also view this dependence as a vice. Since the point of taking a vacation is to relax and recharge, it makes sense that getting rid of the need to constantly check one’s phone or laptop goes hand in hand.

When we put our electronics down, we focus more on being in the moment and embracing the experiences that are currently happening. Vacationers often find that they aren’t able to truly enjoy their experience unless their gadgets are hidden away. This kind of “digital detox” can have incredible effects on one’s psyche and may contribute to making the most out of that long-awaited vacation.

Cons

No one wants to be on their smartphone 24/7 while on vacation. That would mean missing out on so much of why you took the vacation in the first place. But for some, totally unplugging may be a greater source of stress than allowing yourself to stay connected. Ignoring your electronics means coming home to tons of emails, text messages and social media posts that you’ve missed – all with varying degrees of importance.

If the idea of sifting through all of these the minute you touch down sounds like it will instantly undo the relaxation from your vacation, then allow yourself to check your phone every once and awhile. The key to staying plugged in while on vacation is planning ahead and choosing what’s best for you.

Choosing whether or not to stay connected during your vacation can be a tough one. It’s hard to truly unplug in our world today, but to get the most out of your vacation, it just might be worth it. On the other hand, if the idea of being disconnected stresses you out, don’t let that ruin your time away. It’s all about finding the right balance that works for you.
