Leave a Safe Home Behind for Your Peace of Mind

So you’re finally going on vacation. No matter where you’re going, we bet you can’t wait to get there. Whether you’re looking forward to a cold drink by the ocean or a breathtaking hike through the wilderness, we know there’s one thing you don’t want on your mind – stress about the security of your home.

Did you leave the right lights on? Will your house be broken into while you’re gone? Are your pets safe and is your house sitter being responsible?

These questions are the last thing you want to think about while trying to enjoy your well-deserved vacation. Fortunately, there are simple steps and great technologies out there today that can help ease your worries. Here are a few of our suggestions so you won’t have to think twice about the safety of your home.

Plan Ahead

Leaving for an extended period of time? Call your local post office and have them hold your mail. This way your mailbox won’t be spilling over, alerting potential burglars that no one is home. If you have pets, it’s a great idea to ask a friend to check in or hire a pet sitter. Even if you’re not gone for long, you’ll want your furry friends to be looked after.

Set your lights on timers so it will appear as though the house is still occupied, instead of just leaving them on or off the whole time you’re gone.

Take the time leading up to your vacation to install a home video security system. This will allow you to check in as little or as often as you like while enjoying your time away.

While On Vacation

Check in with your house or pet sitter regularly, and make sure you are accessible if they have questions. Take a peek at your video security system from time to time, but just enough to ease your worries. Don’t forget to enjoy your vacation!

Another great way to keep potential burglars at bay is to make sure your yard is kept in good condition. Hire someone to tend to your landscaping while you’re gone, so it appears as though you’ve been there all along. As a bonus, there will be less work to be done when you get back to reality.

Once You’re Home

Coming back from a vacation can take some adjusting. Returning to your normal routine can be a challenge after taking some time to relax and just enjoy yourself. The days following your vacation are the perfect time to post all of your pictures and update your status about the amazing trip you had. Not only does this allow you to relive your trip, but it’s smarter to wait until after your vacation to post anything about it on social media.

While it’s tempting to post directly from the beach or the resort, potential burglars can see that you’re away and assume your house is an easy target. Take a break from social media while on vacation, and wait to post your photos until you’re safely back home.
